Siemens Energy relies on ctrlX CORE

Siemens Energy is in the midst of the transition from centralized to decentralized energy supply. This also requires new control concepts. The company has therefore decided to use Bosch Rexroth's ctrlX CORE. With it, Siemens Energy wants to take the orchestration of power generation plants to a new level. The open architecture of the control platform provides the required high level of interoperability with existing systems and easy scalability for future requirements.

The energy revolution is the greatest challenge of our time. How can we reduce emissions while expanding our energy supply? Siemens Energy, as a global supplier of technologies and services for energy generation and transmission, is answering this question. The company operates in various areas, including the development and production of turbines for energy generation, solutions for the transmission and distribution of energy, and services for the operation and maintenance of energy systems.

A transition from centralized power generation using fossil fuels to distributed hybrid concepts is currently taking place. This requires gas-fired power plants, but also many smaller solutions for renewable energies. Among other things, Siemens Energy is focusing on new ways of generating energy for industry and households. The new systems also require a rethink when it comes to control technology. The orchestration of power generation plants plays an essential role here. Coordination and control of different energy sources can avoid bottlenecks, compensate for fluctuations and make the best use of the entire energy production system, ultimately resulting in a reliable, efficient and sustainable supply.

ctrlX CORE orchestrates energy

Optimal energy production means connecting as many energy sources as possible and the orchestration of energy generation plants and the connection to the central cloud are crucial for this. Siemens Energy uses the ctrlX CORE to give instructions on how to generate or supply energy when various energy generators (e.g. wind turbine, gas turbine, solar panel, etc.) are available.

Bosch Rexroth's universal control platform facilitates the seamless integration of different systems and maximum flexibility in the control and automation of systems thanks to its open architecture.

ctrlX CORE has impressed Siemens Energy – it is used both as the PLC control system for the energy systems and at the same time as an IoT device for connecting these systems to the cloud. In addition to the control logic, the flexible expandability also facilitates additional functionalities such as data aggregation, data standardization and applications in the field of digital twins. The company also values the partner network ctrlX World. This extends the range of solutions around the automation system ctrlX AUTOMATION to include hardware and in particular apps. The required functions can be added later at any time via the ctrlX OS Store.

ctrlX CORE also contributes when it comes to availability. It is intended to serve as an additional instance close to the process, which can take over control as soon as problems with the central cloud arise. The control system from Bosch Rexroth is also relevant for the data throughput volume. Siemens Energy will use ctrlX CORE to realize distributed pre-processing of the data in the future, thus reducing the strain on the central cloud.

Renewable energy interface

Extensive tests are currently underway – the first projects are expected to be implemented at customers' sites before the end of this year. ctrlX CORE will be used as an interface, mainly in the field of renewable energies, e.g. in photovoltaics, batteries and in combination with gas power plants.

Siemens Energy's overarching goal is to respond as agilely as possible to the needs of the changing market. By using state-of-the-art technologies such as ctrlX CORE and developing pioneering solutions, Siemens Energy is positioning itself as a leading player in the global energy transition.
