Local recycling of batteries and the recycling of their valuable raw materials are essential for a sustainable circular economy. On October 24, 2023, Bosch Rexroth announced two new partnerships for the Linux operating system ctrlX OS at its trade press conference at Bosch Haus Heidehof in Stuttgart, as well as a new high-speed solution for transport and positioning that takes automation to the next level.

The vision of an automation world in which competitors become partners and users help to shape the solutions is becoming reality. The operating system ctrlX OS with its ecosystem has won over even more collaborators. The partner network ctrlX World is growing too and now offers even more variety.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is one of the driving forces behind Industry 4.0, transforming automation and production. This is because the IIoT enables the networking of machines, devices and plants with the digital world and promotes the efficiency of processes and systems. As an automation building block, ctrlX AUTOMATION offers a solution to unite IT and OT as well as to increase the efficiency of plants and machines.

Intralogistics is changing. The company DAMBACH Lagersysteme is bringing the benefits of automation to the pallet warehouse. The DAMBACH COMPACT SHUTTLE allows pallets in high-bay warehouses to be stored and retrieved even more efficiently. It is controlled by the space-saving, high-performance ctrlX CORE and can thus play to its strengths in an ideal manner.

The development of machine learning as a subarea of artificial intelligence is rapid. Today, they enable systems to act autonomously and make decisions. Data-based services and applications are the future. These include apps that provide information about the condition of components or give early warning of impending failure in the sense of predictive maintenance. Bosch Rexroth is driving this development forward with ctrlX AUTOMATION.

Bosch Rexroth creates new freedom in hydraulics: With the H4U (Hydraulics for You) software platform and the ctrlX AUTOMATION toolkit. In the past, know-how relating to hydraulic control technology essentially focused on hardware. Now, it is available in apps. With H4U, you can use hydraulics functions the easy way – independently of the hardware. ctrlX AUTOMATION has thus gained hydraulics apps too. The effects of these functions include greater energy efficiency.

Bosch Rexroth has brought openness to automation with ctrlX AUTOMATION. A few months ago, it was time for the next evolutionary step: ctrlX OS. The Linux-based operating system for industry was previously reserved exclusively for the ctrlX CORE controller and has now been opened up to third-party suppliers. Our ctrlX developR and software architect Jochen Scheib was significantly involved in the development and is convinced of the innovation and radiance of this unique system on the market.

With its operating system ctrlX OS, Bosch Rexroth has caused a sensation within the market: The automation specialist has uncoupled the software from its own control hardware and made it available for the industrial environment. As a result, even competitors can use the Linux-based operating system for their own purposes and take on the role of a system and technology partner. WAGO has decided to go this route and is now helping to drive openness in automation as Bosch Rexroth's first partner in this area.

The automation of the future is not a closed space, but overcomes boundaries. This is also demonstrated by ctrlX OS. The Linux-based operating system for industry is another milestone in the ctrlX AUTOMATION world in terms of freedom and openness. Until now, ctrlX OS has been used exclusively on the universal and open ctrlX CORE control system. Now Bosch Rexroth has opened up the operating system to third-party suppliers and makes it available as a separate solution for real-time use in the industrial environment. This is unique in the market. The first technology partners are waiting in the wings. And ctrlX developR are already developing the next ideas.

What good is the best innovation if it doesn't find its way to the target groups? Or is not exploited to its full potential? Our ctrlX developR Maurus Bien knows this too. The application engineer specializes in programming interfaces and is himself the interface between sales and customers. In this interview, he explains why Bosch Rexroth, with the infinite application possibilities of ctrlX AUTOMATION, is now also playing a leading role in previously little-trodden territory.

“More openness and freedom in automation” – the motto for the new developments in the world of ctrlX AUTOMATION. From November 8 to 10, Bosch Rexroth will present these new developments at the “SPS – Smart Production Solutions” trade fair (Hall 7, Booth 450) at the Nuremberg exhibition center.

On September 21^st, 2022, Bosch Rexroth presented two new products at a trade press conference at the customer and innovation center in Ulm. A particular highlight were the live demonstrations, which brought the new freedom in automation to life.

"The ctrlX CORE has really amazed me. I can use it like a smartphone. Just install an app and it's a PLC, an HMI, a 3D viewer or much more. Within minutes, I can change the function by switching to another app. Genius!" says Rajvir Singh. He is a development engineer and automation expert. In his own e-learning school and as an influencer, Rajvir inspires thousands of people. In this interview, he gives us insight into his work and tells us why he is so enthusiastic about ctrlX AUTOMATION.

Bosch Rexroth is taking the next step as regards freedom and openness: In the past, the real-time-capable, Linux-based operating system was used exclusively on the control system ctrlX CORE. However, it is now available as a separate solution for industrial environments. ctrlX OS can be used on all levels – from the field level to the cloud, and on a range of different hardware.

Planar systems offer enormous potential for a variety of industry segments. With ctrlX FLOW^6D, Bosch Rexroth has raised contactless high-performance transport and positioning to a new level. Free-floating transport platforms, so-called movers, are moved on a horizontal, vertical or overhead working surface. Each mover acts in six degrees of freedom at high speed and with great precision – without any friction or pollution.

With ctrlX AUTOMATION, Bosch Rexroth has created a world of automation in which the specialist knowledge of companies from various domains is combined for the purpose of co-creation.  More than 60 third-party providers have already joined the partner world – most recently Salesforce and SICK.

“With our automation toolkit ctrlX AUTOMATION, developed on the principle of the “smartphone for industrial automation”, we took a radical step towards openness in automation back in 2020. In 2021, the leap from an open platform to an industrial ecosystem was achieved. And we’re going further still to allow even greater freedom and openness in industrial automation."

ctrlX CORE is well known in industrial automation as an ultra-compact, high-performance control system. The solution is the heart of the platform ctrlX AUTOMATION and can provide a solution in virtually any situation where control systems are needed. But what makes it such an all-rounder?

On July 13, participants took to the stage for the final of the ctrlX developR Challenge. Developers from all over the world had risen to the challenge of developing new ideas for futuristic automation solutions. Five finalists ultimately won over the jury.

On July 13, 220 developers and industry experts conquered the TechPark of the Bosch Rexroth Customer and Innovation Center in Ulm. To experience a conference made exclusively for developers! Eleven speakers spoke on the main stage and 13 in the breakout sessions on topics such as: Platforms & Ecosystems, SDK, Security, IOT, API, Machine Learning....

Developing the future! Developing future-viable new solutions from ideas – that was one of the goals of Bosch Rexroth’s ctrlX developR Challenge. The international competition motivated developers from all over the world to strive for excellence and exceeded all expectations. It revealed unexpected business opportunities offered by ctrlX AUTOMATION, led to new connections and was above all one thing: great fun!

MathWorks and Bosch Rexroth are bringing together simulation and automation and are thereby supporting the simplified creation of digital twins.
