Video Analysis

AI-supported video analysis for building security and safety

In critical situations, every second counts: The solution set for live video analysis for building protection uses artificial intelligence to proactively identify hazards. It combines the powerful control platform ctrlX CORE with integrated AI chip and flexible ctrlX I/O modules. Conventional detection systems are thus supplemented by an additional layer of intelligence – for improved threat detection, to minimize the spread of danger and potentially to save lives.

The solution set for video surveillance with AI is aimed at systems integrators, operators of industrial properties, data centers, public infrastructures, such as train stations and tunnels, as well as safety-critical facilities and critical infrastructures (KRITIS in Germany). A particular advantage of this system is that existing buildings and systems can also be retrofitted quickly and cost-effectively – without interfering with existing security/safety architectures or central fire alarm technology.

The image shows a camera monitoring something. In the background is a protec-tive shield with the word “AI” on it.

Video surveillance with AI – the benefits:

AI inference right at the edge – no cloud infrastructure required

Preconfigured all-in-one one bundle to get projects off the ground quickly

Connection to fire alarm systems, building management systems and building information systems etc. for rapid action in the event of an alarm

• Quick and cost-efficient retrofitting in existing systems

With the solution set for video surveillance with AI, Bosch Rexroth is transferring its high standards from industrial automation to the field of building and infrastructure security and safety. A special feature of the solution set is that users can integrate their own AI applications directly in the controller.

At the heart of the system is the integrated HAILO-8 AI accelerator, installed on the industrial control platform ctrlX COREplus X3. It enables high-performance AI inference directly at the edge – where the data is generated. The preconfigured all-in-one solution also combines PoE switches and flexible ctrlX I/O modules.

Users can choose from a variety of connectivity apps such as OPC UA, Modbus or MQTT to reliably activate IT systems such as fire alarm systems, building management systems, building information systems, Alamos and Winguard in the event of an alarm.

The retrofit-compatible, open platform concept enables quick retrofitting into existing buildings, and individual use cases – from early fire detection to vandalism prevention – can be added at any time. The combination of AI-based image recognition, open communication architecture and industry-standard hardware produces a solution that grows with you: new use cases can be easily integrated – be it additional cameras, alarm sensors or HMI components.

ctrlX COREplus X3 – AI at the edge for video surveillance

The ctrlX COREplus X3 with integrated HAILO-8 AI chip is the heart of the AI-powered video surveillance. It processes image data locally, i.e. without a cloud connection, quickly, securely and efficiently. The industrial controller combines AI logic, communication and response in one device – robust, compact and available for the long term.

Various ctrlX I/Os are shown in combination.

ctrlX I/O – Flexible integration of sensors and actuators

With the ctrlX I/O modules included, additional sensors or actuators can be flexibly integrated. This means less wiring, fewer components, simple commissioning and maintenance-friendly design. Future multi-range IO modules also ensure highly available, efficient maintenance of the connected sensor system – without any device replacement or long wait times.

WAGO PoE Switches – Plug & play camera connection

PoE switches from WAGO enable commercially available IP cameras to be integrated directly and efficiently into the system. The switches transmit power and data through a single cable, making it ideal for simple, cost-effective installation and reliable live image transmission for AI-supported video surveillance.

ctrlX OS – Open operating system with ecosystem

The open operating system ctrlX OS with ecosystem allows applications to be flexibly enhanced with apps. In addition, ctrlX OS is secure by design and secure by default, and therefore prepared for the requirements of the CRA, certified according to IEC 62443-4-2 and can be flexibly upgraded with additional security functions.

The image shows the two app icons for OPC UA Client and Modbus TCP. The dots indicate that additional apps can be used.

Connectivity apps for connection to alarm systems

A variety of interfaces are available for forwarding detected hazardous events. Users can choose from OPC UA, Modbus TCP, MQTT, BACnet/SC and many more to reliably forward detected alarms and count data to fire alarm systems, building management systems, building information systems, control systems or cloud platforms. The apps run directly on ctrlX COREplus X3. No additional gateways or protocol converters are required.

ctrlX OS SDK – Dedicated AI for video surveillance

With the Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Linux-based operating system ctrlX OS, users develop specific AI applications, e.g., for early fire detection, motion detection or property security. The AI apps run directly on the controller – without a cloud application, with full control over data and functionality.
