Shaping the energy transition together

ctrlX AUTOMATION becomes a key technology in the Omnivise solution portfolio

The way in which energy is produced is undergoing a fundamental change. Decentralized systems, hybrid power plant concepts, and volatile energy markets require new automation architectures that are efficient, open, highly available, and cybersecure. Siemens Energy is consistently driving this transformation process forward with its digital Omnivise platform approach. Going forward, ctrlX AUTOMATION from Bosch Rexroth will play an important part in this.

For some time now, Siemens Energy has been using the control platform ctrlX CORE in the area of control technology and automation to take the orchestration of power generation plants to a new level. The collaboration is now being intensified. ctrlX AUTOMATION and its various components will be firmly anchored in the Omnivise solution portfolio and will therefore be even more closely integrated into the platform architecture in the future. This will create a scalable automation base in energy infrastructures.

Omnivise for the digitalization of energy production

With the Omnivise solution portfolio, Siemens Energy is pursuing an integrated approach to digitalization in energy production. The modular platform combines control and automation technology with digital applications, data-based services, and energy and asset management systems.

The aim is to automate energy plants more consistently, to control them more flexibly, and to operate them more sustainably: from decentralized assets and renewable energy systems to hybrid power plant concepts. The openness of the platform facilitates the seamless integration of industrial automation technologies.

Industrial automation meets energy expertise

By working together with Bosch Rexroth, Siemens Energy benefits from the high pace of innovation in industrial automation and strong IoT expertise. Siemens Energy, meanwhile, brings its extensive knowledge in the domain of power generation and the requirements of critical infrastructure to the partnership. This enables industrial automation solutions to be tailored to the specific requirements of the energy sector and allows technological innovations to be integrated into the energy market more quickly.

Technological advancement with a clear practical focus

In the future, the control platform ctrlX CORE will take over key functions for the digital connection of power generation plants and the regulation and control of energy flows, in order to ensure the balance between electricity generation from renewable energy and electricity consumption in real time.

One focus is on high availability. As a key customer of Bosch Rexroth, Siemens Energy contributes its requirements for redundant control architectures. The Redundancy Manager app enables the control hardware from the ctrlX AUTOMATION portfolio to be expanded into a highly available solution. Communication takes place via OPC UA PubSub on the basis of open standards. For energy plants as part of the critical infrastructure, maximum availability is a key prerequisite for security of supply.

The Model Connect app enables the connection of MATLAB® and Simulink®. This means that, as an alternative to classic PLC programming, complex control and process models can be developed, validated, and simulated in the simulation environment and seamlessly brought into the control system as program code. This creates the basis for digital twins, for example for supporting forecast processes in grid operation.

ctrlX CORE provides a highly secure, flexible edge platform for Omnivise T3000 Edge

One crucial aspect of this is cybersecurity. Energy plants must comply with stringent national and international regulations, for example, in the critical infrastructure segment. The operating system ctrlX OS is CRA-ready and IEC 62443 certified. This means it supports the implementation of high security requirements.

Performance is just as important: Omnivise T3000 Edge uses the ctrlX CORE with   ctrlX OS as a technological platform. The software-based edge architecture enables response times of 1 to 5 milliseconds ("fast automation"). This allows dynamic, hybrid plant concepts to be precisely controlled – with simultaneous direct, standardized connection to IT and cloud systems.

The control platform ctrlX CORE thus provides a robust, secure, and open foundation on which the specialized functionality of Omnivise T3000 Edge is built. This combination allows energy suppliers to safely reap the benefits of digitalization and prepare their facilities for the future of energy supply.

Pooled power gives added value for energy producers

As part of the Omnivise solution portfolio, ctrlX AUTOMATION helps to make hybrid and decentralized energy systems more efficient, flexible, and resilient. The combination of open, software-based automation and industry-specific energy expertise creates the foundation for being able to respond more quickly to market shifts and develop energy generation sustainably.
