Printing and converting: GIC integrates the automation platform ctrlX AUTOMATION into its machines

Graphic Interface Concept (GIC) is a family business with 35 employees based in Île-de-France. GIC has been developing and manufacturing machines for the graphic arts industry for 30 years, and these are now exported all over the world.

"Over the decades, we have built up unrivaled expertise in finishing processes with high added value and are also the market leader in machines for the production and testing of labels with an integrated RFID tag. This market segment is currently booming, with numerous applications in the transport sector, the textiles industry, pharmaceuticals industry, and the events sector," explains Franck Vitali, Managing Director at GIC.

ctrlX AUTOMATION, a complete automation toolkit for the new DYXEE VARIO CUT 350

In order to diversify its sources of supply, GIC decided to look for a new automation partner and, after extensive market research, chose Bosch Rexroth.

"We wanted to collaborate with a manufacturer who is recognized in our field and, above all, capable of providing us with comprehensive automation solutions and supporting us in our innovation efforts. The first project realized with Bosch Rexroth relates to the automation and axis control of our new machine, the DYXEE VARIO CUT 350. This is a compact processing system, ideal for cutting and further processing digitally printed labels. One of the particular features of the machine, which has a base module with a semi-rotary punch, is that it can be expanded with a flexo group and finishing modules. The hardware from Bosch Rexroth supports the modularity concept that we pursue in the development of our machines. The components facilitate communication between the individual modules, with very little wiring required – the solutions are practically plug & play," says Franck Vitali, explaining the company's decision.

Aiming for ever greater precision and speed

Marc Casola, an expert in control systems and electric drives at Bosch Rexroth France, adds: "The applications in the field of printing and converting machines are extremely demanding, particularly in terms of quality. We therefore proposed that GIC work with our latest automation and axis control solutions in the ctrlX AUTOMATION platform. Our entire portfolio is featured in this new machine: HMI, the control system ctrlX CORE, and the drive system ctrlX DRIVE including motors and I/O modules. With this modular system, we are able to achieve ever greater precision with increasingly shorter response times."

"Thanks to these new components, we have been able to achieve even higher accuracy levels and improve the efficiency of the machine. Our DYXEE VARIO CUT 350 is easy to set up and generates minimum scrap quantities," adds Franck Vitali.

New potential to innovate thanks to ctrlX AUTOMATION

The ctrlX AUTOMATION platform is the smartphone of automation and provides the prerequisites for simple programming of new functions, especially thanks to the integration of external apps, while at the same time offering complete security.

Remote access to the DYXEE VARIO CUT is managed via an app from ctrlX World partner Ixon, one of the market leaders in this field.

By using the ctrlX CORE PLC in combination with this app, a secure connection is guaranteed without the need for any additional components.

Thanks to its openness and the secure by design concept, the platform opens up great prospects for new ideas and innovation. For example, image processing systems could be hosted directly on the machine. This is just the start of the collaboration between the R&D team at GIC and Bosch Rexroth technical support.
