Stronger together: How Bosch Rexroth and System TM are shaping the future of timber processing

System TM and Bosch Rexroth joined forces once again to create a state-of-the-art finger-jointing press, designed to deliver increased capacity and precision in cross-laminated and glue-laminated timber (CLT and GLT) production lines tailored specifically for the North American market.

As demand for sustainable construction materials continues to rise, wood is becoming increasingly important as a natural and eco-friendly building resource. To support this development, machine manufacturers must continuously improve productivity, precision, and flexibility. The collaboration between Bosch Rexroth and Danish machine builder System TM shows how advanced automation technology can help achieve exactly that.

Rethinking performance for a growing market

System TM specializes in high-performance timber processing solutions for the global solid wood industry. When the company needed to redesign its finger-jointing press to meet the demanding requirements of the North American market, it partnered with Bosch Rexroth to develop a new automation approach based on the automation platform ctrlX AUTOMATION.

The goal was to create a highly dynamic solution capable of precisely controlling speed and torque while significantly increasing production capacity. By moving beyond traditional hydraulic and conventional drive solutions, System TM gained new opportunities for improving both machine performance and design flexibility.

Open automation enabling new possibilities

The flexibility of the automation solution ctrlX AUTOMATION played a central role. The ability to synchronize multiple axes within a single system, combined with ready-to-use software functions, allowed System TM to implement complex machine functions efficiently while reducing engineering complexity.

The solution combines the control platform ctrlX CORE with integrated PLC functionality, motion synchronization, modular drive system ctrlX DRIVE, and MS2N/MS2S servo motors. Together, these technologies enable a state-of-the-art high-speed continuous press for cross-laminated and glue-laminated timber production, delivering high dynamic performance and precision.

Performance today. Reliability tomorrow

With worldwide service structures, 24/7 support availability, and guaranteed long-term product availability, customers benefit from both high performance and investment security. This global presence ensures that System TM machines can be supported throughout their entire lifecycle.

Technology partnership driving innovation

A key advantage of the project was Bosch Rexroth’s ability to transfer proven technologies from other industries. Synchronization concepts from printing machines and flying cut functions known from metal processing were successfully adapted to wood processing applications.

Close cooperation between the development teams at System TM and Bosch Rexroth, including application engineers in Germany, ensured a fast and efficient development process.

Søren Lindhardt, head of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at System TM, remarks, “Our partnership with Bosch Rexroth has delivered scalable solutions, outstanding collaboration, and fast, qualified support. We always feel in good hands.” Together, we are pushing the boundaries of engineered wood production – building not just machines, but the future of living spaces.
